Here are a few quick highlights for the SDK and the new 2.0 due in June:
$99/year for developers for the SDK including iPhone emulatorFree apps will be allowed
Paid apps will be split 70% dev/30% Apple (No Credit Card fees, hosting fees, or advertising fees)
Wirelessly download new apps or install from iTunes
New Apps already developed: AIM, Epocrates, EA’s Spore
Resizing/scaling/cropping/modifying photos on the phone

Update: The SDK developement kit + simulator is free to download. $99 is the fee to publish your apps. Furthermore, Apple has made one huge, utterly stupid mistake:

The SDK/Simulator is only available for OS X. I mean.. seriously, Apple? You want a ton of apps but you release something this important that only runs on 5% of the world market? Do you think this will actually make people go out and buy Macs or something? I bet people are already running around out there instead working on ways to get OS X running easily inside VMWare.

Screw you apple. Grr.
