Unlimited Minute Plans: Deal or Hype?
All the carriers have been unveiling new ‘Unlimited’ plans. Most with unlimited minutes and roaming, some with options for unlimited minutes, some still with options for adding extra lines to the plan.
So far here is what we’ve seen confirmed from the big four:
AT&T - $99 for unlimited minutes. Unlimited data based on device -$15-30, Unlimited Texting $20
TMobile - $99 for unlimited minutes + texting, data not included ~$15
Verizon - $99 for unlimited minutes, +$20 for texting, +20 for data (and you can’t get data and no texting, has to go text -> data)
Sprint - $99 for unlimited minutes, +$20 to add unlimited texting & data & picture mail
Looks like Sprint and TMobile are easily the best deals for those who use both texting and data. TMobiles network can’t hold a candle to Sprint’s, but Sprint’s customer service probably doesn’t even know how to light a candle in the first place, so…
Also, there’s plenty of rumors flying around that Sprint will cut their price even more. Industry analysts saying they might beat others’ prices by as much as 30-40%.
Frankly, I think most of the unlimited plans are a rip off for most customers. They use the phrase Unlimited! purely in an effort to draw people in who don’t need it and will never use it. People just want more, and they’ll jump on it just so they can tell their friends that if they wanted to they could use 10,000 minutes this month. Will they? Probably not. But they can say they might!
To a select few this will be a boon and significantly reduce costs, but honestly I can’t say that I believe most people actually talk on their cell phones and will use enough minutes to make it worth while. How many people who use ~1000 minutes, a couple hundred texts and a little data will they rope into these unlimited plans?
