The Linux Australia president has made quite a few changes to his house (and even one to himself) in pursuit of technology and using it to make a more wired and easy life.

He has modified his front door with an RFID sensor (and put an RFID tag in his arm) so that it unlocks automatically as he approaches. He can open his living room curtains with the click of a mouse. His sprinklers? A small command and they spring to life, watering his lawn. A plethora of aspects of his house have become automated, all accessible from the computers on his network.

Automated Sprinklet System

He doesn’t even have to walk to the mailbox to check for mail anymore. His system can automatically notify him when something has been put in his mailbox. No more having to walk all the way there to check each day.

His biggest complaint with his system is it is just a big hodge podge of various applications. But… He was using an iPod Touch one day and was struck with an idea. Next on his list is to integrate all of the aspects of his system into a single web interface accessible from all his computers.

So… ultimately cool easy living, or ultimately lazy? I can’t decide!
